Election season is upon us, not just in the mundane world but in the land of Hearthlight. As the Hearthlight community, we hold both the accountability and the responsibility for creating the game we want. Each and every member in good standing of Hearthlight is eligible to participate in our democracy, and we invite you to do so!
In this post, we’re going to remind everyone of how Hearthlight elections go, and break down the deets on what’s happening when.
Two positions are reaching the end of their two-year terms in 2020:

Q: What do these positions do?
A: Quoting from the Hearthlight Governance Doc:
The Executive Officers are the backbone of Hearthlight’s governance. Most day-to-day national leadership will be managed by the Executive Officers. They review and approve the Bylaws of new Chapters, manage funds, conduct community outreach (especially through a web presence), maintain safety considerations, handle disputes between Chapters and Members, and coordinate national events.
President
The Hearthlight President serves as the Chief Executive Officer for Hearthlight, Inc. The President:
Has a service term of two (2) years, and may serve no more than three (3) consecutive terms
Is elected by the Membership
Carries out goals determined by the Board of Directors (BoD)
Presides over National Council Meetings, by
Creating Agendas for these meetings
Disseminating announcements regarding said meetings
Coordinates with the other Executive Officers (VP, Chapter Relations, Treasurer, Web Admin, Secretary, Public Relations, etc.)
Vice President
The Vice President serves as a stand-in for the President in their absence, and:
Has a service term of two (2) years; may serve no more than three (3) consecutive terms
Is elected by the Membership
Carries out goals determined by the BoD
Chairs committees as is reasonable
Serves as the contact person for committees not chaired by the VP
Coordinates with the other Executive Officers (VP, Chapter Relations, Treasurer, Web Admin, Secretary, Public Relations, etc.)
Q: Who is eligible to run for these positions?
A: Those who meet these criteria:
Have been long-standing members of Hearthlight (our governance document recommends 2 years in the game)
Have been nominated, and accepted that nomination
Are running for only one elected office
Have submitted a “why am I qualified?” form to the office of Secretary of Hearthlight (VP Form is now open)
Q: When are the elections?
A1: Vice President: Nominations will open December 16, 2019, and will be open until January 15th, 2020. Nominees will then submit their “Why am I qualified?” forms and an info page will be made available so folks can read up on nominees. The VP Election (electronic voting) will run from Feb 1 to Feb 29, 2020.
A2: President: Nominations will open March 15, 2020, and will be open until April 15th, 2020. Nominees will then submit their “Why am I qualified?” forms and an info page will be made available so folks can read up on nominees. The Presidential Election (electronic voting) will run from May 1 to May 31, 2020.
Q: What do I need to do as a member of Hearthlight to vote?
A: You will receive an email to the address you provided when you signed up for the Hearthlight website. The email will contain instructions on how to cast your vote.
